Materials & Construction

The materials we use at Fohfum, and how we work with them, are carefully considered.

Our goal is to make a cot that is stylish, safe and functional – and that promotes better sleep.  This means it has to be inherently strong, have no moving parts and use quality materials.  It has to last the years, be comfortable, secure, and be conducive to sleep.

We use natural materials that are sustainably produced. In our packaging we use cardboard and avoid the use of plastics. Where we can, we deliver and assemble ourselves so the packaging is recycled. Where we have offcuts, we re-use them for another product. We hate waste.

Furniture

All timber used on the furniture is untreated, kiln dried and locally grown.  The finishes are non-toxic and child friendly.  The fixings are stainless steel and non-corrosive.  The fabric is marine grade sail-cloth that is washable, hardwearing and will not tear.

Mattresses

Made by a small family company in Hawkes Bay, Fohfum mattresses feature a low profile bonnell innerspring system for support and breathability, with a hypo-allergenic felt protection layer and natural latex, cotton ticking with quilted wool comfort layer.  We offer a 100% natural latex bassinet mattress.  All mattresses are made specifically to fit the Fohfum cot or bassinet.

Linen

Using a luscious double jersey knit, Fohfum sheets are made from a natural and environmentally friendly cotton/bamboo mix.  The fabric is soft and warm, yet hardwearing, has exceptional moisture absorption and breathability to keep baby's skin dry, and anti-bacterial and deodorisation properties.

Blankets

Fohfum blankets are 100% natural wool, manufactured in New Zealand using local wool from Romney cross sheep.  Cut to a generous size and edged with traditional blanket stitch, these blankets are rugged and hardwearing , and machine washable.
